5o5 Worlds update

5o5 Worlds at Portland.


130 boat are taking part in the 505 worlds in Portland.  Day 1 start with a 2 hour delay waiting for the wind to come in, when the wind came in to around 8kts. We did not have a great start in race 1 getting a bit tangled up with another boat on the start line and was on the back foot. We think we were in the early 30's coming into the top mark. We got pushed left and sailed into no wind with the spinnaker boat and losing many more boats. We struggled to get back into the fleet trying to find clear air and lanes. We started off with a 66th place.


Race 2 we decided to go early from the gate and get into the shift.  We did not have enough boat speed and struggle again keeping lanes and taking the shifts we needed. We did not get any breaks with the quality of the fleet finishing this race in 33rd and being 83 overall after the first day. Not the start we were looking for

Day 2 The wind was back up and we had a good 12 to 14kts from the south west with sunshine. With 1 race planned for today lasting 90 mins we start about 2 mins in from the gate. We had good pace for about 4 mins but started to lose our lane, we took a little tack up to try and cross as many as we could, but we got headed soon after our tack had to back on to starboard.  This was good for us as we had a better lane, we head this lift for about 2 mins more but a few people over our shoulder had already tack out. When the boat got a nice 8 degree header which we tack on and crossed a lot of boats. We must have rounded the top make in the early teens. Having a good run down to the leeward buoys gained us extra places. We kept the speed and our lanes clear and managed to get ourselves up to 5th Place, so very happy with this result. This this pulled us up to 33rd overall.

Day 3.  First race of the day was looking to be 9-12knots. We had decided to try starting a little later and try and work more the middle right as we had been finding it hard to get back across from the left on the first beat. We did what we said we would do but just at the end we missed the left shift and boats from the left did well. Sailing in this size and standard fleet is really hard to find lanes and getting on the right shift when we want to. We started the day with a 24th.  Race 2 of the day the wind had increased to 12-15kts and at the end gusting 18kts. We started late again but sailing across the wind kept shifting right, the later you start the betting it looked. We must have been late teens most the way round but on the last run we lost a few as we gybed early and the buoys had been moved to the left with a windshift. But the boat which went more right down the run came in with a lot more pressure. The gap was too big to get any places back but we caught up on the front of the pack. Finishing the day of with a 21st bring us up to a 22nd place over. Still lots to do but cannot afford to have a bad race if we want to finish in the top 15.
