Congratulations on another great win for Simon Northrop and Sam Van Barker!

Wednesday, July 01, 2015

Last weekend saw 76 boats make their way to Marconi Sailing Club for the 2015 East Coast Piers Race weekend. This is a long distance sailing event for fast dinghies and catamarans that helps raise money for The Cirdan Trust and Essex Air Ambulance.

Saturday racing involved some medium distances to get the racers warmed up for Sunday, with Simon and Sam getting a bullet on the second race, showing the guys were on track and ready for the big race.

Sunday showed the breeze starting to build in the morning and the teams eager to get on the water. A downwind start and the teams were off! A long kite leg out of the river for the faster boats who managed to fly their spinnakers all the way past Mersea Island until a drop was need to head round the headland to the second gate. Big waves rolling in made the two sail broad reach an interesting part of the course and there was only a short time before kites were hoisted again to get to this year’s turning mark at Clacton. With the return leg back down the shore saw the teams beating across the estuary and then back through the Bradwell gate for the final leg home to the finish line at Marconi Sailing Club.
