A challenging Cowes Week this year with varied wind conditions made for some interesting racing out on the course. The Hyde Sails team were out in the SB20 fleet and we had great results from customers in the FF15 and Squib fleets.
Firstly congratulations to Malcolm Hutchings and Andy Ramsey’s Lady Penelope in the Squib class with Hyde sails, who not only won in the Squib class, but also in White Group and for the second year running the overall winner of Cowes Week! All won with a day to spare with them having won all but one race. Malcolm said “Winning overall last year came as a bit of a surprise and we are just as surprised this year. It’s wonderful to be taking this magnificent overall winner’s trophy back to the East coast once again, where some extremely big celebrations are on the cards. It is always a fantastic week, we come down here for the competition, fun and the fantastic social scene and this week we reveled in it all”
In the Flying 15 class congratulations go to John Hanson’s and crew Helen Selden’s Hakuna Kutoa Katika with Hyde sails for beating the long dominance on the fleet held by John and Rupert Mander and securing 1st place in the class.
We entered our own team in the SB20 fleet consisting of Nigel Grogan on helm and crew Richie Lovering, Jack Grogan and Jo Roberts. With Richie fresh from winning the SB20 Nationals with Jerry Hill and now competing against him, we knew we would be in for an interesting Grand Slam. After 4 days in tough winds, a crew change and our combined total crew weight coming in at 50kg under the limit we hustled our way into a well fought 4th place. A fantastic tournament hosted by Sportsboat World at UKSA, we were happy to be one of the sponsors.
In the 40.7 class Fandango with Hyde sails came third overall on their smart looking Hyde Sails.
Great to see the two Clipper yachts Henri Lloyd and One DDLL fresh from their Round the World race out on the course still going strong on the same set of Hyde sails that took them 35,000 miles on their incredible journey. We even got a guided tour around winning boat Henri Lloyd, which feels as big as it looks above decks and is a little more snug below, it’s still on the bucket list!
A fantastic event and great to be involved in so many fleets. If you have your own Cowes week story with your Hyde Sails we would love to hear more!
