Mersea week is now one of the largest regattas on the East coast and 2013 saw 154 entries for the whole event, plus more throughout the week.
The week is famous for the range of boats that take part. This year America's cup boats ‘Crusader’ and ‘Italia’ engaged in a match racing series throughout the week. However the same level of fierce competition could be seen on the 13 Smacks racing, which date from as early as the 1800's.
The week is also broken up by the famous round the island race where dinghies can race around the perimeter of the 25 km island, involving the boats being carried or trailered across the ‘Strood’ (the road crossing that is partially submerged at high tide and provides the only access to the island).
This year Hyde Sails was successful in many classes. Robin and Rachel Gozzett's 'Phantom' won the IRC fleet. Viv and Linda Fox stormed to a class win in their Mersea Fisherman’s Open Boat (aka ‘Winkle Brig’) 'Wanderer' and 'Aubie Too' won the Sonata one-design class.
Continuing the success for Hyde Sails, Jack Grogan (Hyde Sails’ East Coast agent) won the coveted coconut trophy for winning the round island race. He completed the course in 1 hour 54 minutes in a Laser and also went on to win the 18-boat Laser fleet.
