James Thomson has been appointed as the Hyde Sails distributor for Melbourne and will service the southern states of the country.
Jamie began sailing with his father at the age of 12 in 1974 and after immediate success racing the Aquanaut class in Victoria, moved to the Puffin Pacer class winning both State and National titles followed by a win in the Tasar class Victorian titles. A move to other dinghy classes including 470, Fireball and Sabre soon followed.
Jamie began sailmaking at the age of 19 and furthered his career with two major Melbourne sailmaking companies before starting Thomson Sails in 1994. His loft is based in the Melbourne suburb of Balwyn North.
A move to Flying Fifteens saw wins in State and National Championships along with a second in the Worlds. Further international regattas saw good results in Farr 30 and Etchells as well as a win in the Javelin states and second in the Javelin South Pacific Champs. Just to add to the trophy cabinet, Jamie has won seven 125 class National titles showing his skills as a first class competitor in a range of sailing craft.
Jamie now owns a Cal 39 cruising yacht, which he sailed across the Pacific to Australia and has cruised Australia’s East Coast extensively. Jamie Thomson brings a wealth of knowledge of racing dinghies and one-design classes to the Hyde Sail group as well as a practical first hand view of the needs of the cruising sailor.
