Richard Lovering was racing with new Hyde Sails at the Mercedes Open Meeting
The Flying Fifteen Mercedes Open Meeting took place at Datchet Water SC on March 9-10, 2013.
On the first day, the forecast light winds were apparent on arrival... after a briefing from the Race Officer, the fleet launched and completed three tricky races in light and variable northerly breeze.
The first race was a three-lap triangle, sausage, triangle course with the last two races being windward leeward courses. Richard Lovering and Matt Alvarado in the Hyde-sponsored GBR3955 made the most of the conditions winning all three races on day one with a combination of good starts, sensible tactics, great speed and a cool head in the challenging conditions.
For day two, the forecast was again spot on; a very cold building breeze with a shift to the north-east meant the length of the reservoir could be used. 12 boats made the start of the first race in a puffy and shifty 10-12 knots. The second race was a little windier with less obvious holes in the breeze. Richard and Matt again made the most of the day to grab two more race wins. Both races were incredibly tight at times, competing against amongst others the current National Champion and an ex World Champion. The Hyde boys in GBR3955 were able to get the advantage on the opposition just at the critical moments to sail away for the wins. The key to the success was again good starts, smart tactics, great boat speed and staying warm and dry!
GBR3955 is now ranked No.2 in 2013, the next event on the circuit is Bewl Valley Open Meeting on March 23-24.
