Tarifa is home to the latest addition to Hyde’s international network of sail lofts, covering the South of Spain region.

Hyde Sails is delighted to announce the appointment of a new distributor in Spain. Based in Tarifa, near Cadiz, Gibraltar and the Costa del Sol, Monty Spindler runs a 100sq m loft, which is equipped to modify and repair dinghy and yacht sails.

Monty has been sailing since the age of six, and has over 30 years of sailmaking and sail design experience. He started his sailing career in Optimists in Michigan, USA, before moving to Annapolis where he joined the junior programme at the Annapolis YC with Scott Steele (Hyde’s North American agent and Olympic Silver medalist at the LA Games in 1984). Monty went on to race actively in the Laser class, finishing sixth at the 1977 worlds.

The years in Annapolis were filled with weekends racing keelboats and dinghies in the competitive Chesapeake region. In the summer months he worked as an instructor and began his sailmaking career, working at a wide range of lofts.

In 1981 Monty toured with the US Olympic Team in the Finn, and after a good season, he began working for a large sailmaker in Hong Kong. He eventually opened his own sail loft in Spain in 1998.

The partnership with Hyde means that Monty’s loft will now be able to supply customers with new sails, as well as continuing with its successful repair and alteration service.
