Report from Dave Hall

Tim Bowden who has Emma Stevenson helming his Osprey contacted us in 2016 to make him sails for his unique boat. We got the Genoa and spinnaker pretty close first time but with his carbon mast it took a couple of goes to get the mainsail right. They competed in the 2017 championship to come a credible 6th in a quality fleet.

Tim thought it was a really solid performance with no major cock-ups and, in most races, they were going forward through the fleet. Emma’s tactics were great in the shifty stuff. They had targeted 5th place but missed it by two points.

‘The boat was quick, especially in the light stuff. We sometimes struggled to maintain the pace up wind in the moderate breeze but I think that was more about our technique, and a lack of weight on the wire, than set up and sails. The boat has great potential in a blow. We are getting better at understanding the boat set up, with the help of our tuning partner.’

‘ The kite was quick on most legs but our weight held us back on the tight reaches, maybe this is something we can look at in the future.’

‘We need to work on our starts and tacking – but as in sailboat racing there is always something to learn!’
