Gold Coast Australia takes overall victory as the Clipper Round the World Race fleet complete their challenging race in brilliant sunshine
It was a spectacular scene as thousands of people turned out to watch the end of the Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race in Southampton. Gold Coast Australia secured overall victory, as the non-professional crew on board all 10 ocean racing yachts marked the end of a challenge of a lifetime.
After 51 weeks of ocean racing Gold Coast Australia today took first place, Visit Finland finished in second, while a battle towards the end saw Singapore pip De Lage Landen to the post for third place - finishing seconds ahead. With over 40,000 sea miles behind, the Clipper boats were an impressive sight as they sailed up the Solent, powered by their Hyde Sails.
Looking particularly spectacular were Welcome to Yorkshire and Edinburgh Inspiring Capital, sporting their Make it GREAT Britain spinnakers - thanks to hours of dedicated work by the Hyde Sails team in Cebu.
Hyde has successfully supplied the sails for two editions of this round the world epic, providing support and training for the crews before and during the race, as well as stopover support. Hyde’s Richard Franks said: “We are delighted to have been a part of another highly successful Clipper Round the World Race. The event seems to go from strength to strength. We send our congratulations to the winner, Gold Coast Australia, and to all the crews who took part. To sail round the world in itself is still a great achievement, and to race round it even more demanding. We enjoy the test it gives our sails as well as the challenge it presents us as a sailmaker and very much look forward to the next edition of the race.”
