Hyde powered Mike Budd takes the title, while Hyde boats dominate the top 15…
Mike Budd, in his Hyde sails powered ‘Harry III’ and sailing with his son, James, has won the 2013 Squib nationals in Abersoch.
The week began on Sunday with strong wind and choppy waters, in these conditions the top three finishers used Hyde Sails, with competitors commenting that Hyde’s sails allowed the Squibs to point higher in strong winds.
Mike and James Budd scored two firsts in the highly competitive eight-race series. In fact there were six different winners over the course of the eight races – which just goes to show how hard fought the championship was.
Going into the last race Budd held a 16-point lead, but then he was a victim of a black flag start in the final race and could just watch that battle, eventually winning by a single point.
Mike Budd commented: ‘We had plenty of pace in the breeze as did Groggy and Besty all on Hydes. We had pace in the light too but didn’t sail or start as well in the lighter races but we were lucky with the way the results panned out.’
Meanwhile, as well as leading the championship from day one, Hyde-powered boats were doing well throughout the fleet. The championship finished with 10 Hyde boats in the top 15, a reflection of the extensive sail development work and support Hyde Sails has given the class over the past few years.
