SAIL Loft
The Hyde loft in the Philippines completed its first sails in October 2003 At that time we had 16 employees By the end of 2007 this had increased to 200 staff occupying 55,000 sq ft (5,500 sq. m). The loft is managed by two Hyde sailmakers, Ian Flanders and Martin Newman, each with over ten years experience of working with the company. Their understanding and commitment to Hyde values is an essential part of the success of this bold move to Cebu.
The loft is a model sailmaking facility, clean, light and air-conditioned. Hyde is committed to being the employer of choice in Cebu and we ensure that working conditions are world class.
The Philippines was chosen as the site for the loft mainly because the first language of the country is English. This has made staff training much easier than it would have been in other countries in South East Asia. The Philippinos are diligent and dextrous, and have taken to sailmaking remarkably quickly; the quality that they achieve is outstanding.
All the material delivered to Cebu is tested to ensure that it meets the stretch quality standard agreed with the supplier. We use an Instron tester for this and are one of a handful of sailmakers in the world with this equipment.
There are three computer controlled cutters at the loft, two Lasers and a pizza wheel, the latter cuts Kevlar and Carbon better than a Laser. Also the company has invested heavily in new machinery over the last four years, especially in new sewing machines, mainly to ensure that we can cope with heavy duty yacht sails.
